The Battle
Romanian 1st and 4th Armies participated in the liberation of Bratislava during the final push into Czechoslovakia.
Romanian 1st and 4th Armies, alongside Soviet forces, liberated Bratislava in April 1945 during the Romanian Advance West. Facing a hasty German defense across the Carpathian foothills to the Danube lowlands, the multi-axis assault, including crossings of the Morava River, threatened German encirclement. Fighting occurred amidst cold, muddy ground. The eleven-day engagement concluded with a Romanian victory, forcing a German withdrawal.
