The Battle

Avram Iancu's Moți fighters repelled the first Hungarian attempt to occupy Abrud and the Apuseni gold mines.
In December 1848, Hungarian revolutionaries entered Hungary proper, where they fought against Romanian and Russian imperial troops. On February 4, 1849, after a harsh defeat, the Hungarians retreated to Sibiu towards Sebeș up to the Simeria bridge. The Austrians' goal was to move into the Mureș Valley towards Timișoara by diverting the Hungarians from the main attack.
