Background
With Tsarist Russia poised to intervene, Hungarian commanders urgently needed to consolidate Transylvania by eliminating Romanian resistance in the Apuseni. Control of Abrud was critical — the center of Iancu's prefectural network.

The Battle

Avram Iancu's Moți fighters repelled Major Hatvani's attempt to occupy Abrud. The town was partially burned as Hatvani's column was drawn into a tactical trap.
The First Battle of Abrud was fought on 6 May 1849, when Hungarian commander Imre Hatvani violated a negotiated armistice and attacked the town of Abrud in the Apuseni Mountains. Avram Iancu's Romanian moți fighters retreated from the town but quickly encircled Hatvani's forces. During the occupation, the Hungarian forces murdered Romanian prefect Ioan Buteanu, and peace envoy Ioan Dragoș was also killed.
