Background

Michael's rise in 1599–1600 alarmed both the Habsburg court and much of the Transylvanian nobility, who no longer trusted his rule after the brief union of the principalities. Basta's army and the anti-Michael estates moved to remove him before he could consolidate power.

Cossack mercenaries fled early, Baba Novac's cavalry could not hold the center. Michael was outmaneuvered and narrowly escaped by swimming across the Mureș River.

At Mirăslău on 18 September 1600, Giorgio Basta and the Transylvanian estates defeated Michael the Brave after his coalition lost cohesion in battle. The defeat broke his hold on Transylvania and shattered his first political union of Wallachia, Transylvania, and Moldova.

“Upon viewing Basta's feigned retreat, Michael supposedly said, "Now the coward dog is running, we should follow him." Michael's army quickly left the fortifications to charge Basta's army, but the general turned his heavy cavalry on the advancing Wallachians and routed them.
