Background

The see-saw campaign in Transylvania was nearing its climax. Puchner still held Sibiu but his forces were spread thin and morale was declining as Bem's reputation for aggressive resilience grew.

Puchner defeated Bem, forcing retreat toward Sighișoara. But failed to exploit the advantage with pursuit.

The Battle of Medgyes (Mediaș) was fought on March 2–3, 1849 as part of the Bem's Transylvanian Campaign 1849. Hungarian Revolutionary Army forces, commanded by General Józef Bem, engaged Austrian Imperial Forces forces under General Anton Puchner. Hungarian Revolutionary Army fielded 4,000 troops against Austrian Imperial Forces's 5,000. The Hungarian Revolutionary Army force comprised 3,200 infantry, 400 cavalry and 10 artillery. The engagement was fought on Saxon market town, open approaches terrain, employing Puchner used superior numbers and artillery to repulse Bem\. The fighting lasted 2 days. It was a land engagement fought in winter. The defender adopted a prepared defense posture while the attacker employed frontal assault. The battle resulted in a Austrian Imperial Forces victory. Casualties were estimated at 300 for Hungarian Revolutionary Army and 200 for Austrian Imperial Forces.

Puchner won the battle but lost the campaign. His habitual caution — failing to pursue after victory — gave Bem time to regroup. Within eight days, Bem would capture Sibiu itself in a brilliant maneuver.
