Background

Sibiu was the administrative and military capital of Transylvania under Habsburg rule. A small Russian garrison was already present — the first sign of Tsar Nicholas I's willingness to intervene militarily in the Hungarian revolution.

The First Battle of Nagyszeben (Sibiu) was fought on January 21, 1849 as part of the Bem's Transylvanian Campaign 1849. Hungarian Revolutionary Army forces, commanded by General Józef Bem, engaged Austrian-Russian garrison forces under Gen. Puchner / Col. Skariatin. Hungarian Revolutionary Army fielded 4,000 troops against Austrian-Russian garrison's 6,000. The Hungarian Revolutionary Army force comprised 3,200 infantry, 400 cavalry and 8 artillery. The engagement was fought on fortified city, rolling approaches terrain, employing Direct assault on fortified city; Russian reinforcements tipped the balance against Bem\. It was a siege engagement fought in winter. The defender adopted a fortified posture while the attacker employed frontal assault. The battle resulted in a Austrian-Russian garrison victory. Casualties were estimated at 300 for Hungarian Revolutionary Army and 150 for Austrian-Russian garrison.

Bem retreated but was not pursued effectively. He regrouped within days and defeated Puchner at Slimnic, demonstrating his trademark resilience. The Russian presence at Sibiu foreshadowed the massive intervention to come.
