Background

Bem's rapid recovery from defeat demonstrated the quality that made him legendary — he never stayed beaten. His ability to regroup and counterattack within days demoralized Austrian commanders who expected a demoralized enemy.

Three days after Nagyszeben failure, Bem defeated Puchner at Slimnic in a sharp engagement.

The Battle of Szelindek (Slimnic) was fought on January 24, 1849 as part of the Bem's Transylvanian Campaign 1849. Hungarian Revolutionary Army forces, commanded by General Józef Bem, engaged Austrian Imperial Forces forces under General Anton Puchner. Hungarian Revolutionary Army fielded 2,500 troops against Austrian Imperial Forces's 3,500. The Hungarian Revolutionary Army force comprised 2,000 infantry, 300 cavalry and 6 artillery. The engagement was fought on rolling hills, vineyard country terrain, employing Bem chose favorable ground and used aggressive hussar charges to disrupt Austrian formations. It was a land engagement fought in winter. The defender adopted a hasty defense posture while the attacker employed flanking. The battle resulted in a Hungarian Revolutionary Army victory. Casualties were estimated at 100 for Hungarian Revolutionary Army and 200 for Austrian Imperial Forces.

Puchner's confidence was shaken — the man he had just defeated turned and beat him three days later. Sándor Petőfi, Hungary's greatest poet, arrived at Bem's headquarters after the battle and became his adjutant.
