Background

The Treaty of Passarowitz followed the Habsburg victory over the Ottoman Empire in the Great Turkish War. Austria obtained Oltenia, northern Serbia, and the Banat through negotiations.

Through the Treaty of Passarowitz (1718), Austria formally received Oltenia (Western Wallachia) following a military campaign. Austria administered Oltenia until 1739, when the Treaty of Belgrade returned it to Ottoman suzerainty.

Austrian rule in Oltenia created a new administrative frontier and introduced Habsburg fiscal and military structures, but it never became secure or popular. The province later returned to Ottoman-Wallachian control after the next Austro-Ottoman settlement.
