Thököly launched a surprise attack through the Bran gorge, completely smashing the Transylvanian defensive force. General Heißler was captured and Transylvanian commander Teleki was killed. Thököly was briefly elected Prince of Transylvania.

The Battle of Zărnești (August 11/21, 1690) was a battle between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire. It was the first Ottoman victory following a catastrophic series of defeats that began with the defeat under the walls of Vienna (the Second Siege of Vienna in 1683). On April 15, 1690, upon the death of Voivode Mihai Apafi I, the Sultan appointed Imre Thököly as prince in Transylvania. In the imperial camp were, alongside the 2,000 imperial cavalrymen and 7,000 Romanians and Serbs under the command of Mihail Teleki. The imperial troops were led by General Donat Heissler. The "Ottoman" troops were composed of Ottomans, Romanians, Tatars, and Cossacks. On the right flank were the Tatars, in the center the Ottomans (15-20,000), and on the left flank the Moldavians (2,000) and Imre Thököly with an unspecified number of Cossacks (insignificantly small regardless).
