The Battle
The largest mass protest in Romania before 1989. Triggered by legislation raising the retirement age from 50 to 55 and revoking disability pensions, 35,000 miners struck across five mines. Ceaușescu personally flew to Lupeni and conceded all demands on-site. Within weeks, all concessions were retracted.
The Jiu Valley miners' strike of 1977 was the largest protest movement against the Communist regime in Romania before its final days. It took place 1–3 August 1977 and was centered in the coal mining town of Lupeni, in Transylvania's Jiu Valley.

~4,000 miners forcibly transferred out of the region; leaders sentenced to 2–5 years internal deportation or correctional labor. A massive Securitate informant network was subsequently planted in the mines and remained until 1989.
