The Battle

A student-turned-partisan from the University of Cluj, Gavrilă-Ogoranu led one of the longest individual evasions of the communist Securitate — surviving in the Făgăraș Mountains for nearly three decades. Most group members were killed or captured by ~1955; Gavrilă-Ogoranu survived alone until captured in 1976.

Ion Gavrilă-Ogoranu led a small anti-communist partisan group in the Făgăraș Mountains after the communist takeover. Sustained by local support networks, the group survived for years even as most of its members were eventually killed or captured, while Ogoranu himself evaded the Securitate until 1976.
