Background

By late November Falkenhayn's 9th Army had broken through the Carpathians and was driving across Wallachia toward Bucharest. Romanian forces conducted a fighting retreat to slow German momentum.

Germany achieved victory over Romania.

The charge became one of the most celebrated Romanian cavalry acts. Filitti's 110-saber squadron temporarily dislodged German guns, enabling the retreating division to escape encirclement.
