The Battle

The Battle of the Jiu Valley was fought on Oct 14–25, 1916 as part of the Romanian Campaign 1916. Romania (1st Army) forces, commanded by Gen. Ion Dragalina, engaged Germany / A-H forces under Gen. Kühne. Romania (1st Army) fielded 35,000 troops against Germany / A-H's 50,000. The engagement was fought on river valley, Carpathian foothills terrain, employing German pre-dawn assault through Jiu Valley; General Dragalina was mortally wounded during reconnaissance at the Lainici bridge. The fighting lasted 12 days. It was a land engagement fought in autumn. The defender adopted a hasty defense posture while the attacker employed flanking. The battle resulted in a Germany / A-H victory. Casualties were estimated at 7,000 for Romania (1st Army) and 5,000 for Germany / A-H.

“"Dragalina rode to the front despite protests, believing personal leadership was the only cure for a wavering line; it cost him his life but saved the valley." — Torrey, The Romanian Battlefront
