Romania's initial invasion of Transylvania was first successful, then Falkenhayn's counterattack pushed them back through the passes.

The Transylvanian Offensive was fought on Aug 27–Oct 1916 as part of the Romanian Campaign 1916. Romania forces, commanded by Gen. Averescu, engaged Austria-Hungary forces under Falkenhayn. Romania fielded 440,000 troops against Austria-Hungary's 200,000. The Romania force comprised 400,000 infantry, 25,000 cavalry and 15,000 artillery. The engagement was fought on mountain passes terrain, employing broad-front advance through Carpathian passes; halted by Falkenhayn counteroffensive. The fighting lasted 60 days. It was a land engagement fought in summer. The defender adopted a hasty defense posture while the attacker employed frontal assault. The battle resulted in a Austria-Hungary victory. Casualties were estimated at 60,000 for Romania and 30,000 for Austria-Hungary.
