Background

As Bucharest fell under threat from Falkenhayn's western advance and Mackensen's drive through Dobruja, the Oituz–Trotuș axis was the last open corridor into Moldavia. Von Morgen's mission was to close this corridor and trap the bulk of the Romanian Army west of the Carpathians.

“"General Grigorescu walked the lines himself before dawn. He told the men that there was no line behind this one — Moldavia was behind us and we could not let them through. They did not let them through." — Soldier of the 7th Division, November 1916
