Background
Romania was the last Eastern Bloc state with an unreformed neo-Stalinist regime. The attempted eviction of pastor László Tőkés ignited popular rage built up under years of economic austerity and political repression.

The Timișoara Uprising was the spark of the Romanian Revolution. Beginning as a protest to prevent the eviction of pastor László Tőkés, it rapidly transformed into a mass anti-communist uprising. Despite a bloody crackdown on December 17, the protesters prevailed, leading to the city being declared free from communism on December 20.
