Armed clashes erupted in Reșița during December 1989, as part of the Romanian Revolution. Revolutionary forces and elements of the Army confronted Securitate loyalists in the urban terrain of the cold mountain-basin. Fighting centered around the Hășdat garrison and industrial sites, including the steelworks, with intense nocturnal firefights lasting four days. The uprising, spearheaded by industrial workers, resulted in a victory for the revolutionaries, though at a disproportionately high casualty rate.
