Background

The route through Pasul Tulghes together with the road along the Trotusului valley represented in that era the only communication routes in the Eastern Carpathians region between Transylvania and the Kingdom, which, due to their relatively low elevation, could be exploited militarily with great efficiency for the transportation of heavy artillery and for motorized or horse-drawn convoys. They were also the only routes between the Kingdom and Austro-Hungary in this Carpathian region along which larger forces could be deployed, as human agglomerations and thus necessary resources for the support of military columns existed along them. The retreat of the Northern Army to the old frontier As a result of the battles at Sibiu and Brașov at the end of September and the beginning of October, the 1st and 2nd Romanian Armies were forced to retreat from Transylvania into the Old Kingdom, pressed by the German 9th Army.
