Background

Sibiu was the power base of Nicu Ceaușescu, the dictator's youngest son, who served as First Secretary of the Sibiu County Party Committee from 1987. His presence made the city a particular target of revolutionary anger. When the revolution spread to Sibiu in late December 1989, Nicu called for Securitate reinforcements from Bucharest to suppress the protests before fleeing to the capital on 22 December.
