The Battle

Protests erupted across the ethnically mixed city, followed by ethnic tensions in March 1990.

Târgu Mureș, also known as Mureș-Oșorhei, Oșorheiu, and Târgul Mureșului (in Hungarian: Máré, Máré-Osóré, Máré-Osóréváros), is the municipal seat of Mureș County in Transylvania, Romania, comprising the localities of Mureșeni, Remetea, and Târgu Mureș (the seat). Located in the historical center of Transylvania, on both banks of the upper course of the Mureș River, the city lies in the central-northern region of Romania, with the Mureș River and the Cornești Hill forming its geographical boundaries. Târgu Mureș borders the communes of Sângeorgiu de Mureș, Cristești, Livezeni, Corunca, Sântana de Mureș, and Sâncraiu de Mureș. Throughout history, it served as the cultural, industrial, economic, and educational center of the Székely Land. Târgu Mureș was the seat of the Mureș County Seat, the Mureș-Turda County, later the Mureș Region, the Autonomous Hungarian Region, the Mureș-Autonomous Hungarian Region, and currently serves as the seat of Mureș County.
