The Event

Heavy fighting around Electroputere factory and city center. Army defected to revolutionaries on Dec 22.

Fighting erupted in Craiova during December 1989 as part of the Romanian Revolution. Revolutionary forces, initially composed of a worker march from the Electroputere factory, clashed with Securitate loyalists defending the party headquarters amidst a cold Oltenian winter. Army units joined the revolutionaries on December 22, shifting the balance. After four days of heavy urban combat, revolutionary forces secured a victory, capturing the city and preventing loyalist consolidation in the Oltenia region.
