Background

Hungarian government dispatched punitive columns to suppress Romanian resistance across the Apuseni. Brad was a key market town in Zarand county, and its capture demonstrated the futility of conventional resistance by peasant forces.

The defeat at Brad convinced Avram Iancu that open-field battles against trained troops were suicidal. He shifted to mountain guerrilla warfare — ambushes, log-rolling, and terrain denial — which proved devastatingly effective.
