Popular discontent fueled protests in Arad during December 1989, sparking armed clashes with Securitate loyalists. Revolutionary forces, bolstered by defecting army units numbering an unknown amount, initiated a joint seizure of Communist Party buildings and industrial zones across the urban terrain. Facing a hasty defense, Securitate snipers offered sporadic resistance amidst cold weather. After five days of fighting, revolutionary forces secured victory, echoing solidarity with Timișoara.
