Background

The raid came at the opening of the Eterist rising in the Principalities, when insurgent leaders hoped bold attacks on Ottoman posts would trigger a broader anti-Ottoman revolt. Galați, a Danube port with a small garrison, offered both an early target and a symbolic opening blow.

Karavias led 150 Greek fighters in a surprise attack on the Ottoman garrison at Galați — the opening armed act of the Ypsilantis campaign on Romanian soil.

The Raid on Galați occurred in winter 1821, marking the first armed clash of the Filiki Eteria uprising within the Principalities. Led by Karavias, approximately 150 Greek fighters launched a surprise dawn raid on the Ottoman garrison in the Danube port town. Employing tactics of surprise, the Greek fighters engaged a hastily assembled Ottoman defense. The action, part of the broader Ypsilantis Expedition, represented the initial military engagement on Romanian soil.

Filiki Eteria achieved victory over Ottoman garrison.

The victory achieved by the Romanian army at Galați had both military and political consequences, as not only was the front saved, but the Bolshevikization of other Russian military units along the front line (totaling approximately one million soldiers) and even of Moldova was avoided. At that time, the city of Galați, a Danube port located between the Siret River (beyond which were the armies of the Central Powers) and the Prut River (beyond which a large part of the Russian army had retreated in disorder), represented the southernmost point on the front line. Following this victory, Basarabia was able to receive the military aid it had requested, allowing it to protect its population from the looting and crimes committed by the retreating Russian armies in great disorder. Galați was not the only location where Russian soldiers clashed with Romanians.
