Background

Mezid Beg had invaded Transylvania with a large raiding force, reaching as far as Hermannstadt (Sibiu). Hunyadi gathered the Transylvanian nobility and intercepted the raiders.

Mezid Beg led an Ottoman raiding army deep into Transylvania toward Hermannstadt (Sibiu). Hunyadi intercepted and defeated the Ottoman force, killing Mezid Beg. Demonstrated that Ottoman raids deep into Transylvania could be checked.

The Battle of Hermannstadt was fought on 22 March 1442 near Sibiu, where John Hunyadi intercepted an Ottoman raiding force led by Mezid Beg. The clash ended in a major Transylvanian-Hungarian victory and the death of the Ottoman commander.
