Jan Olbracht invaded Moldova under pretext of crusade, actually seeking to install his brother Sigismund on the Moldavian throne. Stefan feigned retreat, then ambushed the Polish army in the Cosmin Forest (Bucovina). Trees pre-cut to fall on the column; Polish cavalry trapped in the forest. Catastrophic Polish defeat; Jan Olbracht barely escaped.

The Battle of Codrii Cosminului (Cosmin Forest) took place on 26 October 1497 in the forests of northern Bukovina. Stephen the Great of Moldova ambushed the retreating Polish army of King Jan I Olbracht, using pre-felled trees to trap the column. The catastrophic Polish defeat — with approximately 20,000 casualties — ended Poland's attempts to subjugate Moldova.

The cross near Stephen the Great's Oak, with the inscription from his great-grandsons Expecting to lose half of his army in this conflict, Stephen himself was surprised when it became clear that his military losses were minimal. Among those wounded in battle was Stephen's son and heir (after the death of his elder son Alexander), the future ruler Bogdan the Blind (Bogdan III), who lost an eye in the battle due to a Polish knight's lance. The boyars near Bogdan recounted after the fight that he would have continued fighting, shouting in pain at the same time.
