Blockade of Belogradchik(1878)
Background
By January 1878 the Russo-Turkish War was effectively over — Russia had reached Adrianople and the Ottomans were seeking armistice terms. Romanian forces invested remaining Ottoman fortresses in the western Balkans to secure the front before the political settlement. Belogradchik, perched on dramatic rock formations, was virtually impregnable to assault but fell to patient blockade as the garrison saw no prospect of relief.
